Seven Verses, One Message

Surah Fatiha consists of 7 verses which are very powerful. The one message of all these verses is to accept Allah as God, worship Him, seek help only from Him, meaning to believe in the oneness of Allah and to acknowledge it.

Divine Praise, Human Need

This surah is composed in such a way that some parts mention the sovereignty of Allah and some parts are like a supplication, where man first mentions Allah and then asks from Him. Like one verse says that we worship You alone, which is for Allah, and then we seek help only from You, which is for the servant. And then we ask, “Guide us to the straight path,” which is for the servant. This way, the whole surah is a supplication which is a human need.

Tafsir of Surah Al-Fatiha – Verse by Verse

Bismillah; In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate

Every surah begins with the name of Allah and His praise. Meaning, I begin in the name of Allah, Who is Most Merciful and Most Compassionate.

Verse 2: All Praise is Due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds

All praise is only for Allah, Who is the Lord of all the worlds. In this, Allah’s praise is mentioned and it is clarified that everything in this world and the Hereafter, all the things in the universe, all the solar systems that humans are now discovering and becoming aware of, Allah has already mentioned in the first verse of the Qur’an that there are many solar systems, universes, and worlds whose Lord is only Allah.

Verse 3: The Most Merciful, The Most Compassionate

Two names of Allah are mentioned which are Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem. These are among the great names of Allah. These are attributes of Allah. The names of Allah reflect His attributes.

Verse 4: Master of the Day of Judgment

Allah is telling that one day this world will end and everything will finish, all people, angels, and every creature created by Allah. On that day, only one being will remain, and that will be Allah. The Owner of that day is also Allah.

Verse 5: You Alone We Worship & You Alone We Ask for Help

We worship You alone and seek help only from You. Here, an important thing Allah is telling is that I am the only One who deserves to be worshipped and to be asked for help. For example, if your wife tells you that she is your wife but also someone else’s, what would you think? Your heart will be at peace only when she says that she is only your wife. Similarly, Allah is telling that I am the only God and no one else, and you should seek help only from Me.

Verse 6: Guide Us to the Straight Path

Show us the straight path. A human being has to search for ways to live in the world, so Allah has included this supplication in the Qur’an so that a person asks Allah and seeks the straight path from Him. Because only He can show it and make one walk on it. If He does not show it, then no one else can.

Verse 7: The Path of Those Whom You Have Favored, Not of Those Who Went Astray

The path of those upon whom You have bestowed Your grace, meaning show me the path that You have shown to Your special servants, to the Prophets upon whom You have bestowed grace and save me from those upon whom You were angry and who went astray.

The Attributes of Allah in Surah Al-Fatiha

Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem

The two names of Allah mentioned in this surah have a deep meaning. Both Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem relate to mercy. But Rahman means that Allah is merciful to all creation in the universe and Raheem is for those who ask from Him and worship Him.

Rabbul Aalameen

Allah is clarifying that everything in this universe belongs to Him. Even you, your hands, your eyes, jinn, angels, animals, fruits, vegetables, the world, all planets, stars, sun, everything that is visible belongs only to Allah.

The Concept of Tawheed in Surah Al-Fatiha

Oneness in Lordship

He is alone, there is no partner with Him who is managing this dominion with Him. He alone is sufficient. Allah is telling that I am the only God, I am alone.

Who are “Al-Maghdubi Alayhim” and “Ad-Daalleen”?

These are the people or nations who denied the path of Allah and the truth and refused to believe in Allah and then became the target of Allah’s wrath. Who went astray and did not care about the path of truth. Then Allah also did not care about them.
